INCIDENCE OF CHILDHOOD TYPEI DIABETES
MELLITUS IN BEIJING

Objective: To determine the incidence of Type I
diabetes mellitus in children among 0~14 years of age in Beijing.
Methods: Children < 15 years of age diagnosed with
TypeI diabetes mellitus between 1 January 1988 and 31 December 1996 were
registered according to criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO)
Multinational project for childhood diabetes. The primary source of case
ascertainmemt consisted of inpatient records of 78 Hospital. The secondary
source consisted of office records from 1576 schools.
Results: Between
1988 and 1996 183 patients < 15 years of age were detected by the two
sources. The degree of ascertainment was 97.7% The average annual crude was
found to be 0.99/100000 (95% ci 0. 84 ~ 1.13). The ascertainment corrected
incidence rate was 0.97/100000 (95% CI 0.59 ~ 1.50). Thee incidence was
higher for girls (1.24/100000) than the boys (0.76 /100000). The peak
incidence was between 10 and 14 years of age.
Conclusion: The incidence of Type I diabetes mellitus
in Beijing between 1988 and 1996 was 0.97/100000. The incidence was lower
than Shanghai (1,21/100000 ) and Hong kong (2.0/100000 ) . The total
incidence was 0.56/100000 in China, Beijing was the forth. The highest
incidence in the world was Finland (35.0/100000) and Sandinia
(34.4/100000), Beijing has a low Type I incidence rate in the world.
