Objective: To determine both Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE), Nitric Oxide
(NO)/Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), their
regular changing pattern, relationship, and influence on happening,
developing and recovering of various nervous systems diseases were
investigated and their clinical values were illustrated.
Methods: In 115 cases with nervous system s diseases - include 18 Guillain -
Barre Syndrome (GBS), 30 epilepsy, 28 bacterial meningitis and 40 acute
viral encephalitis. 20 age - matched children with normal neurologic development
as control group. All CSF were collected by sterilized, closed method
within 24 hour after entrance. NSE and NO/NOS levels in CSF were Studied by
ELISA enzymo-immunoussay and Griess chemical colorimetric methods,
respectively.
Results: 1. NSE , NO/NOS levels
of CSF were significantly higher in all groups (5.3090.59 ~ 11.914.28ng/ml , 2.450.58 ~6.890.89umol/ml , 4.440.89 ~ 12.602.10umol/ml.min,
respectively ) than that for the control group (4.110.431ng/ml, 1.900.41umol/ml, 2.820.65umol/ml.min). 2.
The CSF-NSE levels was at the highest level in group of bacterial
meningitis (11.914.28ng/ml), and NO/NOS levels of CSF were at the highest level in
group of epilepsy (6.890.89umol/ml, 12.62.10umol/ml.min). 3. NSE to NO, NSE to NOS and NO to NOS of CSF
changes were very correlated (r=0.57 ~ 0.78, p<0.05 ~ 0.01) in all
groups of subject.
Conclusion: The results as above showed: 1. NSE, NO/NOS Levels of CSF elevated
in varying degrees with nervous system s diseases, to illustrate definite
neuronal and glial cell damage to certain extent in these diseases of GBS,
epilepsy, bacterial meningitis and acute viral encephalitis. 2. As active
biological mark---both NSE and NO/NOS of CSF changes were very correlate
(r=0.57 ~ 0.78, p<0.05 ~ 0.01), to show that they all giving play an
important roles in diseases of happening, developing course. 3. NSE Levels
of both bacterial meningitis and epilepsy were at the highest level in all
groups, and NO/NOS also were at the highest level, to state clearly neuronal
and glial cell damage seriously, NO/NOS might become more serious these
damages through cellulotoxic. In GBS, mainly due to axon and myelin of
peripheric nervous fibers immunity damages, and neuronal damage were not
serious, so NSE were elevated lowest, NO/NOS expressivity were also lowest.
As conclusion, NSE, NO/NOS can be regarded as marker of importance and
sensitivity in neuronal cell damages, for judging happening, developing and
recovering of nervous systems disease with definite clinical values.
