Objective: To investigate the effect
of local injection prednisolone acetate at out-patient department (OPD) on
infants with congenital torticollis.
Methods: From Oct. 1997 to Dec.
1999, 380 patients, 139 boys and 241 girls (age range: 2 to 5 months), with
congenital torticollis were managed by local injection prednisolone
acetate, massage and passive extension at OPD.
Results: All patients were
followed-up for the average of 13 months (range: 3~27 months). The disappearing
of tumor, muscle mollification and the improvement of torticollis were seen
in 375 patients. Among them, 96 patients received only one injection
(25.6%), 261 patients received second injection (69.6%) and 18 patients
received third or fourth injection (6.8%). For the other 5 patients the
muscular didnt show any changes after the third injection.
Conclusions: Local injection prednisolone
acetate and accessory manual massage and passive extension at OPD is an
safe and reliable regimen for the infants with congenital tortivollis.
