Objective: To
understand the abnormality of the enteric ganglia in Hirschsprungs
disease, the morphologic change of the ganglia of this disease was examined
in detail.
Method: Quantitative estimation of the
abnormal changes of the intraganglionic neurons and glia cells was also
made in tissues from patients with HD, age ranging from 0.5 to12 years.
Results: The
aganglionic segment of HD patients showed the hypertrophic nerve fascicle
and the absence of nerve cells. The transitional segmant of HD showed the
reducing of the density of ganglia and the size of neurons and glia /
neuron ratio per ganglion in myenteric and submucous ganglia contrasting to
the proximal segment of HD and the normal contrals. The proximal segment of
HD had no any difference with the normal controls.
Conclusion: in
HD the abnormal changes existed, despite the changes of the ganglia and
neurons which were reported before, the changes of the enteric glia cells
existed also. Further understanding of the enteric glia will be helpful to
know the pathogenesis of HD allied diseases.
