Objective: The purpose of this
study was to understand the incidence of phenylketonuria (PKU) in Zao
Zhuang area and the characteristic of its epidemiology so as to provide
scientific basis for taking measures to cure it at early stage.
Methods: First determine the
phenylalanine (phe) content of the blood by using Guthril bacterial
inhibition and then the subjects of the study whose phe>4mg/dl should be
reexamined. If those that phe>20mg/dl, we determined them as classical
PKU, and those whose phe4-20mg/dl, as persistent hyperphenylalaninemia
(PHP). After being diagnosed, they were treated by eating low-phe food.
Results: The subjects of the
study consist of 51935 newborns and PKU was found in 6 infants, PHP was
found in 1 infant. The incidence was 1/7419. 4 of 26446 male infants were
found with PKU and 1 with PHP. 2 of 25489 female infants were found with
PKU. 3 of 24040 urban infants were fount with PKU and 3 of 27895 rural
infants with PKU and 1 with PHP. After being treated, 7 sick infants were
coming on well with black hair and no extraordinary smell.
Conclusion: PKU occurs high in Zao
Zhuang area. Being processed by statistics, the occurrence of this disease
has nothing to do with sex and regions, p>0.05. Treatment at early stage
can prevent mental deficiency effectively.
