Methods: 40 children with indolence IV enrolled in the study including. 105 IV injection during Nov. 1999 to Dec. 2000. The preparation of local surface anesthesia EMLA was used before IV puncture. The effects of surface anesthesia were observed in different age groups by means of brief pain questionnaire (BPQ). The degrees of pain were judged by Wong-Banker`s method which divided into 4 degrees: O no pain, I light pain, II pain and III evident pain.

Results: There were remarkable effects to release the pain or stress resulting from IV puncture in all age groups (p>0.05). The effect of anti-pain was started from 15` and prolonged to 90, (p>0.05). And the best effect of pain release was on the 60 to 90 (p<0.001). The validity rate was 77%, lasting to 2 to 2.5 hrs.

Conclusion: SA is effective to release the pain of IV puncture of children in different ages and capable of attaining the best effection by 60-90 mins, to ease the pain caused by injecting with stimulent drugs. Most patints or their parents are willing to and request to continue to use EMLA to ease pain. The research shows that SA is practical, convenient, uninjured and easy to use. It is also accepted by society and worthy of clinical application and extending. Using of SA as an aspect of technology development in nursing can fit in the change of nursing modle and meet the demand of life in high quality by people.
