Objective: To
characterise the perinatal mortality rate (PNMR) and neonatal morbidity in
(TMC) Tripoli medical center.
Methods: Data collected
from the registry book of the delivery theatre and labor rooms and neonatal
files in neonatal unit in TMC. During one year from 1st of
September 1996 to 31st of August 1997, we consider the perinatal
period extends from 24 weeks gestation to the 1st week of life,
we used definitions of world health organisation (WHO) clssification of
diseases
Results: Total
deliveries were 8130 births. The total perinatal deaths were 285, out of
whom 150 (52.6%) were stillbirths and 135(47.4%) died during the 1st
week of their life out of whom 38.5% died during 1st day.
Hence the perinatal mortality rate (PNMR) is 35.1 per 1000 births.
Early Neonatal mortality was mainly related to; (1) complications of
prematurity, (2) birth asphyxia (3) congenital anomalies and (4) bacterial
infections respectively.
Conclusion: The PNMR is high in TMC and more efforts should be used to plan
a strategy to improve the perinatal results and medical services in
general.
