Objective: To study the clinical significance of testing serum ionized calcium in the diagnosis of neonatal hypocalcemia.

Methods: Divide 82 infants in two groups: Group A46 premature infants and group B36 full-time infants. Compare the total calcium (Tca) and the ionized calcium (Ica) of the premature infants with those of the full-term infants. To explore whether there is significant difference between them. All the blood samples are collected within 72 hours after birth.

Results: There is significant difference in the ionized calcium between the premature infants and full-time infants, but no significant difference in the total calcium between them.

Conclusion:  The serum ionized calcium can reflect the truth of calcium in the blood more accurately than the total calcium. Its more useful in the diagnosis of hypocalcemia and should be used more widely.
