Objective: To
investigate the prevalence and type distribution of childhood cerebral
palsy (CP) in China.
Method: A cross
sectional survey was carried out among 1047327 children aged 1-6 years old
in Heilongjiang, Hebei, Gansu, Jiangsu, Guangxi, and Sichuan provinces of
China during May 1997 C December 1998.
Results: The
crude prevalence of CP for children aged 1-6 years old was 1.92 per
thousand (95% CI1.84-2.00); In addition,
prevalence of CP were also reported for factors such as sex (2.24 in male and 1.55 in female), age (over 2.2 among children younger than 3 years old and
below 2.0 among the olders),
ethic group(1.95 in Han
and 1.32 in the Minorities),
birth weight, gestational age (35.1 in
premature ), and area. As the type distribution, the spasticity is the most
(53.6%), then the atonia (13.4%), the ataxia (10.0%), the athetosis (4.6%),
the tremor (0.9%),the rigidity (0.6%), and the mixed (12.4%).
Conclusion: Prevalence
in China is at the low range among the world, which may be due to low
prevalence and low survival rate of premature newborn in China. The
prevalence and type distribution are associated with areas, sexes, ages,
ethnic groups, birth weights, and gestational ages.
